Всем спасибо, всё заработало. Последовал последнему совету и
пересоздал файловую систему. После чего уже никаких ошибок не
возникало.
Правда был другой косяк. На винте стоял АЛМ 2.0, а на домашней
машине, к которой я его цеплял и пересоздавал fs -- АЛМ 2.2. Поэтому
при последующей загрузке получил ругательство того, что fs создана
при помощи более нового софта, чем имеется и предложил загрузится с
сингл-моде. Я конечно загрузился и обнаружил, что корневой раздел
подмаунтился как read-only. :)
В общем загрузился я с диска АЛМ2.2 в rescue, сделал chroot в /mnt, а
там уже сделал небольшой апдейт: сначала apt с 8-го диска, а потом
уже e2fsprogs с какого-то из дисков, предварительно сделав apt-cdrom
add на первые 6 CD.
Обновлять полностью до АЛМ 2.2 не стал из-за лени и отсутствия
необходимости. Вот когда перестанут updates для АЛМ 2.0 выпускать,
или винт помрёт, вот тогда и поставлю последний на тто время ALT
дистриб. :)
