Похоже на неверно прописанный режим vga при загрузке
в /etc/lilo.conf
Попробуйте поменять его на 791 - это 1024х768.
или эти значения:
vga=[ASK,EXT,EXTENDED,NORMAL]
Allows overriding the default video mode upon kernel startup.
