Are there any IDEs (Integrated Development Environments) for Linux? Sure. For starters, look for ActiveState's ActivePython (Python), Amy, AnyJ (for Java), VioSoft Arriba (for Java), BlackAdder (for Python and Ruby), blIDE, Boa-Constructor, ICS's BX Pro (for Motif/C++), Code Forge's C-Forge, Code Blue, Code Crusader with the Code Medic debugger, Omnicore Software's CodeGuide (for Java), Metrowerks's Code Warrior, Data Display Debugger (DDD), Interactive Software Engineering's EiffelBench, FLTK & Fluid (for C++), Sun's Forte and Forte Community Edition (for Java), fpGUI (for Object Pascal/Delphi), FreeBuilder (for Java), gIDE, Glade, Glimmer, gMiniCPPEenvironment, CYGNUS's GNUPro, IDEntify, Guido van Rossum's IDLE (for Python), InfoDock, Jasmine (for Java), Borland's JBuilder aka JavaBuilder (for Java), Jedi (for Java), SGI's Jessie, Jext (for Python), Jipe (for Java), JJTop (for Java), JOODA (for Java), New Planet Software's JX Development Suite, Allaire's Kawa (for Java), KDbg, KDevelop, KDE Studio, ActiveState's Komodo, Borland's Kylix (for Object Pascal aka Delphi, with C++ and Java support to be added soon), Borland's "Kylix Open Edition" (for GPL-licenced projects only, using Object Pascal aka Delphi source code initially, and later C++ or Java source) National Instruments's LabView, Lazarus (for Object Pascal/Delphi), MetaCard Corp.'s MetaCard (for MetaTalk), Suite 3220 Software's Moonshine and Moonshine Professional, NetBeans (for Java), Nexidion Designer (for PHP), Omnis Studio (for the Omnis 4GL), OpenAmulet, PerlComposer, GNUStep's ProjectCenter, Sun's NetBeans Developer, PythonWare's PythonWorks Pro (for Python), Quick-Tk, Emediat Solutions's RadBuilder, Runtime Revolution Ltd.'s Revolution (for Transcript), RHIDE, Scintilla (for GTK+/C++), Data Representations's Simplicity and Simplicity Professional (for Java), Wind River Systems / TakeFive Software's SNiFF+ and SNiFF Penguin, CYGNUS's Source Navigator with the Insight debugger, Squeak (Smalltalk-80), Tcl Developer Studio (for Tcl/Tix), SwingSoft's SwingBuilder (for Java), TIA (for GNAT Ada 95), Titano, TogetherSoft's Together, TrueBASIC (Linux version to be released soon), VDKBuilder, ViPyl IDE, IST's Visaj (for Java), VisKProg, IBM's VisualAge Java and VisualAge Smalltalk, MicroEdge's Visual SlickEdit, Visual Tcl (for Tcl/Tk), Cincom's VisualWorks Smalltalk, WideStudio, Q Software Solutions's Wedit, WG Builder, H Archeopteryx Software's Wing IDE (for Python), SMB's WipeOut, wxBuilder, wxDesigner, wxPerl (for Perl), wxPython (for Python), wxStudio, Xwpe-alpha, and Zend IDE (for PHP), Digital Creations's Zope Studio. There are others. (Warning: Some of the above are binary-only and x86-Linux-only.) In the longer term, you should consider the possibility that you're solving the wrong problem: That is, long-time Unix developers find that emacs's (and xemacs's) or jed's tight integration with the gcc/g++, ctags, and gdb makes them more productive than do the RAD / GUI-builder / IDE tools listed above. This is clearly a question of taste, but please consider the traditionalist Unix user's toolkit, as well. You should also consider whether that the language and libraries one picks aren't considerably more significant than are --glossy editing tools. --------------------------------- b..
