У меня работает ("PAM уже из поставки", остальные - "любопытства для" -
аналогично). Рекомендую (PAM) осторожно. Не дело гонять по сети системный
passwd в base64 формате (другое дело настроить аутентификацию по SSL). В
дополнение к прочему (читайте коментарии к исходникам, я через эти грабли
прошел), для "теневой" базы паролей (а сейчас через нее практически все и
работают) требуется установка SUID. Конечно, им удобно (и относительно
безопасно) пользоваться для "внесистемной" базы account (там и SUID не
нужен). Но для такой и NCSA auch в самый раз.
