Ну так vmware насколько я знаю пытается работать с пространством
виртуального диска напрямую, т.е. минуя файловую систему. У меня
она также не заработала, когда диск под guest system был в разделе
с reiserfs. Поэтому специально под вирт. диски vmware приходится
держать раздел ext2. А всё остальное, включая root, живёт под reiser.
