По пробовал переставить систему в режиме с настройками. Все отработало
правильно.

Так он же и выбора особого не предоставляет. А вот выбрать XFree 4.0.3 или
3.3.6 бывает полезно.
В варианте с настройками они у меня просто не завелись.

Не работает. После установки с выбором, x86cfg в графическом режиме просто
не работает. В текстовом создает файл XFConfig-4. При попытке после этого
запустить X'ы моргает экраном и выдает на консоль no screens found. Секция
screen в файле есть. XFDrake после выбора unlisted карточки (родная
настройка не работает) предлагает выбор серверов (гораздо меньше чем x86cfg)
и лезет на диск за пакетами от 3.3.6

А можно явно выбрать каким драйвером пользоваться ?
