В том-то все и дело, что в kppp только ttyS4
А в документации и помощи про это я вообще ничего не нашел. Хорошо,
подсказали посмотреть
dmesg (огромное спасибо!)
а там модем на ttyS14.
Решил попробовать
ln -s /dev/ttyS14 /dev/modem
- работает!
А настройки сохранял так: в файле
/etc/rc.d/init.d/*udevd прописал эту ссылку и все заработало!
Огромное спасибо всем за помощь (я еще новичок в ALT Linux ;-))!!!

Если можно, приведите пример, как вы это прописали в udevd..
