1) Загружаетесь.
2) Устанавливаете исходные тексты ядра (если они не установлены).
3) Читаете в /usr/src/linux файл README. Там описаны все телодвижения в
очень доступной форме.

Большое спасибо за советы, ссылки - буду скачивать, читать, устанавливать.
А вообще как-то странно - более раннее ядро устанавливалось без всяких
прыжков в ширину....
