Привет, я как раз недавно доделал перевод всей моей почты на IMAP.
Мне очень понравилось: работая из дома и с работы, я обращаюсь к
почтовым ящикам на сервере. Синхронизируюсь с ними. Говорят, оптимизировано
для диал-апа, так что это происходит разово и быстро. Про каждый почтовый
ящик (для каждого списка рассылки завел свой отдельный) можно сказать, чтобы
при синхронизации брались заголовки или все сообщения.
Состояние сообщения (непрочитанное, прочитанное, удаленное и т.п., в
т.ч. перетаскивание его в другую папку) при синхронизации передается на
сервер и он потом его отдает другим клиентам.
Кроме того, на сервере можно запускать поиск сообщений. Сервер найдет и
я загружу себе только то, что он нашел.
Еще радует то, что можно пробовать много разных почтовых клиентов, и они
друг другу не мешают.
Если почту читать на одном компьютере, то смысла в IMAP гораздо меньше.

Всю жизнь работал с POP3, а тут вдруг интерес замучил, что же это за IMAP
такой :-)
