Did you try aumix or any other mixer to see if the levels are OK?
Would XMMS complain due to "device busy" or "play in silence"?
Are you using KDE? If yes, then try to find in its Config Center
(sound section) something like "start artsd at startup" and
disable it, then run "killall artsd" -- that could be troublesome
too.

Michael,
I must apologize. Sound IS working. I was used to hearing the KDE startup tune
(Mandrake 9.0) and since I did not hear it, assumed nothing sound related was
working. I was wrong. Sorry for the xtra trouble. Sound in XMMS seems fine.
Will check other sound related programs over the next few days.
I have a few other isses to work out with JR.....getting my PalmPilot working
and my digital camera. But, I will take a few days to see if I can stumble on
a solution before posting for more help.
