Зависит от того, чьи поделки и какого рода программушки.
Если поделки свои и программушки свежие/аккуратных авторов,
то лучше берите последнюю версию и при необходимости см.
http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.7/porting_to.html; если есть старый
код, чинить который нет желания -- может понадобиться откатиться
на более старый компилятор, который был не так суров по отношению
к разгильдяйству на входе.
У меня на хостах, где занимаюсь сборкой, стоит gcc4.7
(это сизиф). Чего-либо плохого про gcc4.5 сходу не помню.
Примерно то же относится и к auto*, хотя там привередничанье
бывает более сомнительно, на мой пакаджерский взгляд...
