Я бы сказал что в первую очередь из-за CPAN, а во вторую -- за то что
язык-то гибкий весьма. Правда write-only, что я считаю единственным его

Ты некоторое время назад вон тоже искал куда свалить, на Ubuntu пытался,
еще куда-то. Это факт. Однако с тех пор много времени прошло, а ты все тут
:) И это -- тоже факт :)
Уж слишком специфична перловка. Я вон сейчас на жабе писать вынужден, так
иногда код сначала на перле пишу, тестирую, а потом на жабе переписываю
начистовую. Так быстрее получается.
Самое смешное что языков которые бы могли с ним конкурировать на его
родной нише (practical extraction and report language) собственно и нет
вообще, насколько я знаю.
А CPAN это killer feature.
