Сделал так:
start_daemon --pidfile "$PIDFILE" --lockfile "$LOCKFILE"
--user dyndns --expect-user dyndns --displayname ddclient --
/usr/bin/perl /usr/sbin/ddclient -daemon "$CHECKTIME" || failure
Теперь вроде правильно работает.
