Существует драйвер ядра для ускорения соответствующего драйвера X. В
общем случае первого может и не быть, а второй присутствовать обязан. И
никакого отношения последний к ядру не имеет, у X (XFree86 или X.org, не
важно) есть своя инфраструктура для модульной реализации своего
функционала -- это драйверы различных устройств ввода и вывода, а также
всякие вспомогательные модули.
