Вроде бы всё просто:
Сервис dm (S45dm)
стартует существенно раньше
сервиса xfs (S90xfs).
Поскольку у меня ещё в промежутке много всяких сервисов,
сервер фонтов не успевает загрузиться до запуска X-ов.
Где это правится не знаю (в chkconfig?). Поэтому просто ручками
меняю.

По дороге вылезла более существенная проблема:
При загрузке с SMP-ядра дохнет система при чтении
NFS-каталога с большим количеством файлов (3857 штук).
Проверял на разных сетвых картах (e100, 8139too), поскольку
было подозрение на драйвер.
Пришлось вернуться на 2.4.22-std-up-alt13 :-(
