Сомневаюсь, для этого нужна очень странная магия -- лезть в
/proc/<pid>/environ, да подсматривать. Да еще и знать в какой момент его
вдруг сменили.
Жуткое извращение, причем совершенно ненужное -- локальные приложения
должны лезть сами в terminfo и использовать то что сказали в TERM. А что
там в TERM у удаленных приложений он никак узнать не может.

И что именно там было такого, что не работало с TERM=xterm в том же xterm
при этом?
Я понимаю, что могут быть разные необычные ситуации, требующие необычных
ситуаций. Но по факту -- любой терминал нынче, обычно, просто работает.
