Сеть, таки, нормально не заработала. :-(
Свитч показывает, что соединенеи произошло на 10Мбит,
ifconfig в числе прочего (на пингах) показывает
RX packets:1076 errors:542 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:224
RX packets:1479 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
на соседнем компе поднят ftp -- не может соедиться, но и не обламывается --
просто ждёт (или поцесс идёт, но оооочень медленно).
чёткого ответа я в и-нете не нашёл, но, может это:

может помочь? Я не разбираюсь в ядростроении, но могу попробовать собранное

lspci -n говорит про это устройство, что оно 10de:03ef
