Вам просто повезло. У меня winXP SP2 с последними обновлениями ничего не
сказала про то, что воткнутому USB-HDD не хватает питания (на ноуте), также
как и Linux. Устройство обнаружилось, но работать не хотело. Правда под Linux
на 12-й консоли всё же можно было прочитать, что-то типа про невозможность
прочитать разделы и нарушенную integrity устройства:)
