Демон авторизации. Прослойка между сервисами courier-программ и различными
хранилищами данных для авторизации.

А в конфиги, в /etc/courier-imap, не пробовали заглянуть? imapd, imapd-ssl,
pop3d, pop3d-ssl достаточно самодокументированы.
