Protocol field compression - это не MPPC, а стандартная опция PPP.
Вообще для поля номера протокола в PPP отведено 2 байта, но номера
протоколов выбираются так, что для основных протоколов, используемых при
передаче данных, старший (нулевой) байт может не передаваться.
Специфика MPPE в том, что этот номер из исходного пакета оказывается
внутри поля данных MPPE, и использование там PFC не обрабатывалось - вот
эта обработка и была добавлена. При этом в отправляемых пакетах этот
номер передаётся без сжатия, чтобы сохранить совместимость со старыми
версиями патча.
А вот в патче для ядер 2.6.x, лежащем сейчас в kernel-feat-net-ppp-mppe,
действительно есть поддержка MPPC.
