С месяц назад у Vladimir Velychko в debian-russian наблюдались
схожие проблемы с последними ядрами/ppp. Посмотрите, может,
наведет на мыслии...
А аутентифицируются-то юзвери нормально? Что в messages, или на
_эту_ систему они нормально добираются?
