Спасибо за советы,
но проблема снята сразу после работы простым удалением всех настроек гнома,
поскольку его с 2.4 тоже обновлял до 2.6.
И делал я это даже не столько из-за devhelp'a сколько потому, что
столько ругани было в "интернет-прессе" по поводу изменений в новом
гноме, а я почему то особых неудобств не испытал.
Вот думаю надо посмотреть как он будет жить со своими оригинальными
настройками. Посмотрел - и все равно не разочаровался.
Спасибо всем кто его собирал и отлаживал для alt'a.
