В убунту ставим w32codecs или кладем файлик vp7vfw.dll в /usr/lib/codecs/.
Играет, но оно жручее до проца.

Под x86_64 наверное увы.

Да, это такой вендузячий кодек. Насколько мне известно, нативных реализаций нет.
Виндовый проприетарный кодек по определению не может быть супер-крутым.
Плюс невозможность ускорения на VDPAU и такие аппетиты — ненужен, ящитаю
