Началом отсчета в истории Linux служит 9 августа 1991 года. Именно в этот день
студент Хельсинского Университета Линус Торвальдс (Linux Torvalds) отправил в
конференцию comp.os.minix сообщение о том, что он работает над созданием
бесплатной ОС, подобной Minix. "Она вряд ли будет когда-нибудь поддерживать
что-нибудь, кроме 80386 и жестких дисков AT ... Я не хочу, чтобы она была
такой же большой, как GNU",-писал Линус. Прообраз современного Linux, версия
0.01 увидела свет в конце августа. "Она была не слишком хороша, в ней не было
драйвера гибких дисков и она немногое могла делать. Не думаю, что кто-нибудь
когда-либо ее компилировал. Но я уже был одержим и не мог остановиться, не
выставив Minix за дверь",-вспоминает Линус [цитата по книге М. Уэлш и др.
"Запускаем Linux" (третье издание), СПб, 2001, стр. 26]. Первой официальной
версией Linux стала 0.02, увидевшая свет 5 октября 1991 года. В ней уже могли
работать bash и gcc. Сознательно или по воле случая Торвальдс избрал для
своей курсовой работы лицензию GPL, разработанную Free Software Foundation. И
понеслось...
