Насколько опнимаю, это виртуальное устройство, вряд ли оно Hardware.
А в логах что-то пишет, почему он failed ?
Можно попробовтаь забить на SCSI (если через него не работает например
сканер или еще кто-то) и поставить kernel 2.6 с ide-cd
