Разобрался. Если запускать с чистой консоли, то действительно
/sbin/setsysfont работает и от юзера. Если запускать с mc, то
/sbin/setsysfont от юзера ругается. При этом sudo setsysfont с mc
работает нормально, и главное действительно грузит шрифты. Видать как-то
связано с pty в качестве управляющего терминала.
P.S. Установка драйвера версии 6111 проблему с пропаданием русских
шрифтов в консоли не решила :( Но это видать уже вопрос к nVidia.
