Огромное спасибо.
Добавив libata.force=3:noncq,mwdma2 к параметрам ядра проблема решилась
почти полностью. Всю ночь винт был под нагрузкой - ошибки не лезут.
"Почти" потому что скорость записи у меня получилась 8MB/s в Linux
против 30MB/s в XP.
Но теперь понятно куда копать.
