Либо первый раздел начинать не с нулевого цилиндра, либо (как
у меня) первый primary partition сделать с откровенно "левым"
типом, который хотя бы вызовет удивление и вопросы. Например,
поставил 0x40 (Venix 80286) и задокументировал это на вики.

Одно дело "подгулявшие" секторы поремапить, другое -- механика
от работы под нагрузкой лучше не становится. Это не только мои
соображения, "после трёх лет строго на пенсию" коррелирует и с
данными коллег, и с данными гуглей, насколько помню:

Ну и обычно в сопоставимые деньги получается заметно расширить
дисковое пространство, на что всегда почему-то находится спрос.
То есть вопрос разве что в том, что наступит раньше -- "пенсия"
или нехватка места.
