Пробовался лежащий в Sisyphus pilot-link-0.11.8-alt1.1.1 и самосборный
из CVS. Так что проблема в чём-то ещё... Может, в ядре, может, в
достаточно старом железе больших машин.

Я это подозревал :-) . В сети по поводу таких проблем сообщения есть, но
их немного. Так что в среднем должно работать.

Увы. Наиболее быстрый вариант, который видел - через WiFi. Где-то
раза в 2-3 быстрее, чем по USB.
