Преимущества по сравнению с update_kernel_modules:
1) не требует привилегий рута, ничего не меняет,
только составляет список для передачи в apt-get install;
2) обновляет ядро как текущего типа (std-up,...), но и указанного вручную;
3) понятнее, потому что показывает выполнение через промежуточные листинги
и при желании подробно объясняет то, что делает;
4) remove-kernel так же автоматически сносит старое ядро,
стараясь соблюдать при этом все меры предосторожности.
