Для 4-х рабочих столов разные фоны. По умолчанию у меня симлинки были.
Можно считать атавизмом и забыть.

Желательно все, чтоб неповадно было, но IMHO достаточно KDE, GNOME, MATE
и XFCE.
По идее это не обязательно. Достаточно, чтоб DM root-а не пускал.
