Следует заметить, что для konsole и gnome-terminal $TERM также есть
xterm, но в этих терминалах backspace работает традиционно.

А как это узнать? Почитал man terminfo, ничего не понял.
Впрочем, файл /usr/share/terminfo/x/xterm принадлежит пакету
terminfo-5.7-alt1 и не менялся.
