Так как Сизиф развивается довольно линейно, без ветвлений, лучший
вариант идентифицировать дистрибутивы по дате, попутно
документируя все перемены глобального масштаба (типа новых
initscripts, переход на libdb4.N, perl6, xorg...)
При этом для Master 2.4, например, такой датой должна являться не
дата выхода дистрибутива, а дата форка Сизифа (пример - новые
alternatives).

Вот-вот. А release_tag можно использовать для
включения/выключения некоторых фич пакета, специфичных для
дистрибутива...
На самом деле это крайне полезно - некоторое число пакетов долгое
время живут в одной "ветке" и для них логично делать обновления в
поддерживаемых дистрибутивах (postgresql, vim - как пример).
Облегчается процедура бэкпортинга програм из Сизифа...
