Так я разобрался, вроде, где причина - конфликт имён.
/usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1-rt26-up/arch/i386/Makefile:
...
GCC_VERSION := $(shell $(CONFIG_SHELL) $(srctree)/scripts/gcc-version.sh
$(CC))
...
Странно, почему оно во время сборки ядра не мешает?
