У меня на via8233 звук запускался, но был со страшными скрипами
(начиная с 2.4.20-alt2).
Последний раз нормальный звук я слышал на 2.4.20-alt0.8 там alsa0.9.0rc6.
похоже найден рецепт восстановления:
1.
- в kernel-2.4.20-stable.spec делаем s/0.9.0rc7/0.9.0rc6/ бросаем в
SOURCES исходини alsa 0.9.0rc6 (доступны здесь
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa/ftp/driver/)
- пересобираем ядро.
- устанавливаем пробуем

Есть предложение: если это поможет все владельцам via82xx, всё-таки
включить в дистрибутив такую сборку на последний диск.
