Я, похоже, ошибся!!!
Только что на WindowMaker-0.80.0-alt0.2 у меня абсолютно без
проблем установился OpenOffice 641C!!!
Поддержку gnome я не отключал, функция, на которую у меня были
подозрения не изменилась (она работает в точности в соответствии
с гномовскими спецификациями). Вывод: я ошибся в диагностике и глючило
что-то другое, что изменилось.
Так что большая просьба ко всем: проверить уникальный у меня случай или
нет.
P.S. Сразу про проблемы с локализацией:
1. В подсказке текст на закладке "Содержимое" вылезает за пределы
собственно закладки.
2. В диалоге открытия файлов все точки монтирования
(в моём случае /home и /proc) надписаны как "Lokales Laufwerk".
