Кстати есть очень прятная альтернатива syslogd
modular syslog
http://freshmeat.net/projects/msyslog/
у него очень много возможностей, одна из самых "вкусных"
на мой взгляд -- защита от модификации log-ов c помощью
модуля хэширования.
Хотелось бы увидеть его в дистрибутиве.
