Я не думаю, что FHS и тем более здравый смысл где-то будут нарушены.
Перечитав FHS нашёл строчку о том, что добавлять каталоги в /var тоже
плохо, но можно после обсуждения в рассылке FHS.
Сейчас делаю /var/lib/vdr вместо стандартного для VDR /video. Однако
совмещённый каталог с постоянно меняющимися видеоархивом и настройками
телеканалов, ключей, конфигурации антенны и пр. плохо вписывается в FHS.
Настройки и видеозаписи нельзя разделить по разным каталогам или сделать
личными и поместить в /home из-за специфики VDR. Для этого надо править
код.
