Сделал. Оказалось, что оно ругнулось на один из файлов в наборе
модулей что оно не ELF. Действительно, там не бинарный модуль был, а
текст.

Слишком старая версия mkinitrd?
Убрал тот файл, образ создался, но при загрузке не ядро не
смонтировало / на XFS.
Собрал свой вариант ядра. Странно, но mkinitrd тоже автоматом не
отработал, хотя никаких текстовиков в списке модулей не было. Руками
все прошло без ошибок. Но ядро все равно не грузится, даже не доходит
до монтирования дисков. Выпадает в oops. Железо: Dual PIII, VIA694D.
Если нужно, пришлю конфиг ядра и точное сообщение ядра о своей
мучительной смерти. Или для 2.6.3 это уже не актуально? На выходных
постараюсь вытянуть ядро из сизифа, надеюсь на нем все заведется.
