Переписать заново таблицы или код mc?
Если таблицы, то вроде не так уж и не подъёмно.

Сейчас как выход из ситуации -- использую xterm c преварительной
настройкой локали,
(это, конечно требует X)
Здесь, правда не знаю какие шрифты нужно (можно) указать для кодировки KOI8
(для CP1251 это microsoft)
