У меня была похожая проблема. :-(
Старое ядро (мастер 2) грузилось через символические ссылки. После apt-get
install kernel-2.4.19 эти ссылки указывают на новое ядро. Проблемму запуска
старого ядра я поборол правкой ссылок и редоктированием конфига загрузчика.

ИМХО:
1) добиться загрузки старого я ядра.
