Хм...
Уже перепробовал:
iocharset=utf8
iocharset=iso8859-1
locale=ru_RU.utf8 (этот параметр я увидел при монтировании ntfs раздела у себя в fstab...)
Все остается по прежнему... крякозябры...
Что можно еще посмотреть?
