А можно узнать примерные размеры /usr и /tmp? Скажем, исходя из того,
что /var 1 GB хватает и / 4 GB хватает, RAM 1 GB, swap 1 GB. Задачи
пользователькие www, mail, m-media, плюс, преобразование RAW фото в
TIFF, JPEG как батчем, так и с помощью плагина для The GIMP.

Вы используете JFS на всех указанных Вами отдельных разделах?
