Кажется, я недооценил степень "юзабилити" Гнома и основанного на нем. Во
всяком случае Гном3 для файлов офиса/pdf не делает превью только в самом
"мелком" режиме отображения. Во всех остальных он таки делает превью.
Естественно, что для 99.99% текстовых документов и таблиц на этих превью
не будет ничего, кроме белого квадратика с рядочком черных точек.
Видимо, разработчики Гнома считают, что если у вас в каталоге сотня
файлов типа "документ", то вместо иконок, позволяющих глазу сразу
разделить файлы на типы, гораздо удобнее будет сотня безликих
квадратиков. Да чего там сотня, даже три рядом лежащих файла, два из
которых текст, а один таблица, неотличимы на взгляд никак! Это,
безусловно, великое достижение в доведении интерфейса до состояния
максимально неудобства для пользователя! :(
Однако, это не отменяет факта, что в XFCE не отображаются даже белые
квадратики.
