Да, это действительно ограничение самого драйвера.
Посмотри ls -l на номера этих устройств
48,0 48,1 и т.д. до 48,7 а для c0d1 - уже 48,8 - т.е. на c0d0
всего 8 штук партиций.
Documentation/devices.txt этот вывод подтверждает.
По идее, поправить не очень сложно, но это поломает
совместимость с уже имеющимся распределением /dev/rd,
так что, увы...
