Ну, я уже не совсем помню как правильно было в 4-х версиях...но думаю в любом случае сначала настраиваетесь на нужный репозитарий, потом устанавливаете утилиту update-kernel.
и от рута запускаете её, там в параметрах можно указать какое ядро вам нужно std,smp или что то другое. Утилитка сама скачает выбранное вами ядро и все модули для него, и пропишет всё в лило. после этого останется только перегрузиться.
