Проблема решена, если кому нужно то рецепт ниже :)
1. Переустанавливаем php5-mysql
2. Доставляем php5-mbstring и php5-mcrypt
3. в php.ini поднимаем лимит памяти (15M к примеру)
4. задаем пароль пользователю root из mysql (с консоли или при помощи knoda)
5. теперь phpMyAdmin работает
6. profit!
P.S. А нахрена в системе уже стоит php5-mysql, но неработающий? В чем
цимес оставлять такие траблы юзерам?
