Ну почему же.
Когда меня этот баг мучал, то я скачал бинарную сборку с mozilla.ru, удалил ручками всё в
/usr/lib/thunderbird/ и распаковал, то, что скачал туда же (в /usr/lib/thunderbird/).
Жизнь наладилась сразу. Потом в сизифе обновилась сборка до версии 3... я её поставил.
Знаю, что криво, но всё работало и не падало.
