Ну скорее не настройки, а информацию о пользователях и прочих объектах,
которыми управляют эти программы. А необходимо это для того, чтобы для
разных программ эта информация была общей. А настройки - это слишком
мелко и кроме того в настройках адресной книги, Postfix, Courier IMAP,
Samba и /etc/passwd :) довольно мало общего, так что здесь LDAP делать
нечего.

В целях (см. выше) и способах хранения данных - OpenLDAP, например,
умеет хранить свою БД на SQL-серверах.
