1.Необходимость установки rpm возникает крайне редко,
2.С дистрибутивом идет конвертер alien:
Alien allows you to convert LSB, Red Hat, Stampede and Slackware
Packages into Debian packages, which can be installed with dpkg.

Установка и конфигурирование могут оказаться сложноватыми для новичка,
других недостатков я не заметил (многие упомянут "медленное обновление
стабильной ветви", но для моих нужд это не проблема).

Там несколько сборок ядра, у меня стоит 2.4.18
